Why Paint Fails Faster in Hawaii — and How We Prevent It

Exterior paint on Oahu and Maui typically lasts five to eight years, compared to ten or more on the mainland. Three forces drive that gap.

UV exposure. Hawaii sits at roughly 21 degrees north latitude and receives considerably more direct ultraviolet radiation than the continental United States. South and west-facing elevations chalk and fade first, often years ahead of the rest of the structure.

Salt air. Properties within about a mile of the shoreline take continuous salt deposition. It attacks metal fasteners, railings, and flashing before the paint film itself shows failure, which is why we specify corrosion-inhibiting primers on all metal components in coastal work.

Humidity and rain. Windward and shaded elevations hold moisture long enough for mildew to establish beneath the coating. Left untreated, it lifts paint from the substrate no matter how good the product is.

  • UV-resistant coatings on sun-exposed elevations
  • Corrosion-inhibiting primers for coastal properties
  • Mildewcide treatment before priming
  • Scheduling built around Hawaii's rainy season

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does house painting cost in Hawaii?

Painting cost is driven by five things: square footage, surface condition, prep required, number of coats, and access. Prep is usually the largest single factor — on a home with widespread peeling, wood rot, or failing caulk, preparation can account for more of the total than the paint itself. Second-story work requiring staging costs meaningfully more than single-story. Coastal properties within about a mile of the shoreline need salt-air-rated primers and corrosion-inhibiting products on metal components, which adds to the total.

Because two homes of identical size can differ substantially once we see the actual surfaces, we don't publish flat rates — a number quoted sight-unseen is either padded to cover the worst case or set to be revised later. Instead we walk the property, assess each elevation, and provide a free written estimate that separates prep, materials, and labor so you can see exactly what drives your number. Most estimates are delivered within one business day of the walkthrough.

Does Kapili Painting provide free estimates?

Yes. We visit your property on Oahu or Maui, assess the surfaces, and provide a written, itemized estimate at no cost and with no obligation.

What paint works best in Hawaii's climate?

Hawaii requires 100% acrylic latex coatings with high UV resistance, and elastomeric systems for stucco and concrete block. Properties within about a mile of the shoreline need salt-air-rated primers and corrosion-inhibiting products on metal components. Mildew-resistant additives are standard on windward and shaded elevations. We match the coating system to your specific substrate — stucco, wood siding, Hardie board, concrete, or metal.

Do you work with AOAOs, HOAs, and property managers?

Yes. AOAO, condominium, and multi-unit painting is a core part of our commercial work. We provide detailed written scopes for board review, phased schedules that minimize disruption to residents, certificates of insurance, and a single point of contact throughout the project. We are licensed and insured under Hawaii contractor license BC-28938.

How often should I repaint my home in Hawaii? Most Oahu and Maui homes need exterior repainting every five to eight years, compared to ten or more years on the mainland. Intense UV, salt air, and humidity break coatings down faster here. South and west-facing elevations and coastal properties typically need attention first. Interiors generally last seven to ten years.
Do you serve Maui? Yes. Kapili Painting serves Maui including Kahului, Wailuku, Kihei, Wailea, Lahaina, Paia, Makawao, and Haiku, for both residential and commercial projects.
Is Kapili Painting licensed and insured? Yes. Kapili Painting operates under Hawaii contractor license BC-28938 and carries liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage. Certificates of insurance are available on request. We have served Hawaii since 2007.
What is the best time of year to paint in Hawaii? April through September is generally the best window, when rainfall is lowest and humidity is more stable. Windward-side projects need schedule flexibility year-round because of passing showers. We build weather contingency into every exterior schedule.
Do you offer financing? Yes. Financing is available for painting projects subject to credit approval and applicable terms, allowing you to complete the work now and pay over time.
